Sites and Markers

#1: Old Stone Church

Located at 470 Candler Park Drive, from 1918 to1950 the Old Stone Church was home to the Antioch East Baptist Church. They added East to their name after they moved from their from their original site on Oakdale Road. Since 1980 the Old Stone Church has been home to the First Existentialist Congregation (an independent member of the Unitarian Universalist Association) aka as “First E.”

#2: Rose Hill

This marker at the corner of McLendon Avenue and Candler Park Drive commemorates the site of the Rose Hill/Mayson Subdivision, 1892–1942. It reaffirms a community of hundreds of African American residents who lived in early Edgewood–Candler Park from 1870 to the 1980s. The marker was installed in 2010.

#3: Evening Star Lodge

Located on Candler Park Drive opposite Miller Ave, this marker commemorates the Edgewood Evening Star Lodge, 1893–1942. The marker was installed in 2010.

#4: Original Church Site.

Located between 420 and 432 Oakdale Road, this marker commemorate the original site of Antioch (East) Baptist Church, 1877–1916. The current property owners and neighbors have underwritten markers here honoring the significance of this early African American Legacy site. A commemorative granite bench was placed in 2011 and the Legacy Marker in 2013.

#5: Hooper Street

This marker is located on Hooper Avenue, west off of Oakdale Road and south of the Benning Place intersection. It commemorates 100 years of African American family life on Hooper Street, 1882–1980s. The marker was installed in 2020.

#6: Mary Lin School

Located at 586 Candler Park Drive, the Mary Lin School was built in the late 1920’s but was not open to African American children until 1965. We placed a memorial brick there in 2009.
