Walking Tour

Our historic sites and markers are located around a central block bounded by Candler Park Drive, Miller Avenue, Oakdale Road, and Benning Place. From the Candler Park–Edgewood MARTA station it is a 11-minute walk to the Old Stone Church (#1 on the map) and a 7-minute walk to the Original Church Site (#4 on the map). With time for reading and leisurely walking, the entire tour should take about an hour.

The 24/7 interactive virtual website tour created with Jane’s Walk ATL for the BiRacial History Project is a particularly useful resource. It provides additional images, text, and maps. (Jane’s Walk ATL, created by the Freedom Park Conservancy in partnership with Emory University’s Center for Digital Scholarship, is part of an annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by urban activist Jane Jacobs.)

Areas shaded in yellow were African American dwellings in 1930.
